How halo brought my D&D group together

sequel to my first halo story

As a forever DM, I learned quickly that not a lot of people care about lore, overall story, or even there enviornment. At least that’s what it felt like with this group. I had tried playing vanilla D&D with them and the first campign went as well as you might think. Seeing that they were murder hobos, I told them I was working on a campaign for them that they wouldn’t forget. I’ve been watching this channel and seeing the 40k story unfold gave me some insperation for a newer version for my old halo rules. They didn’t know much about halo so I showed them firefight for ODST and reach. They’re hooked, now for the hard part, making sure this didn’t go like with my first group. This timeI said they would get their nicknames after their simulations were over.

Started with something simple, forward recon in Mombasa with a side mission: Sabotage or destroy any small covenent posts in their sector.

Their classes would also be assigned depending on what they did in the sim. Not to my suprise, they all chose a rocket launcher with either a smg or an assult rifle. Our fireteam had five guys, my brother and our four friends. They had a transport hog and were combing the far side of the city. Instead of getting a birds eye view of the city by getting to the top of one of the towers, they decided to joy ride through the city and blow up any patrols they came across, they did this five times in a row before they ran out of rockets, at which they were pretty far into covenent territory. They didn’t care, instead they left the hog and went in on foot. They wanted to clear their entire sector. But I have to give them credit, they knew how they were going to do it. Each of them had two grenades and the next post they came across was a fuel station for phantoms. This was well guarded with several elites, jackel snipers on portable towers, grunts, and a pair of hunters.

I wasn’t trying to be a mean DM, but you go this far and try this kind of stuff, i’m not going to make this easy for you. And that’s what they wanted.

My brother and one of the guys got close enough to throw some frags at the plasma crates (at least that’s what I called them), while the others got behind the jackel towers. My brother threw the first nade at the crates while the others threw some up the grav lifts of the towers. The jackels were gone in a instand with there bodies flying off the towers. An elite major wached this and sent the grunts to sweep the area. This is where they went loud, my brother took out the first one with a quick burst from his Ar while his partner roled a perfect nade killing the rest. The other three tried getting a better angle on the hunters, but got spotted. The hunters rushed at them, one going to slam one of them while the other let out a plasma beam trailing the other two. The major and two minors armed with plasma rifles went after my brother and his partner. If you thought the nades were clever, no this was clever. My friend who was being rushed by one of the hunters went next to a plasma crate and rolled out of the way so the hunter slammed his shield down and blew himself up. He then grabbed it’s arm and killed the second one while it was occupied with the other two. “Nice one overkill!”, he laughed and gave him a thumbs up. Now all that was left was the elites, then to blow the place. My brother and his buddy were pinned. They made a mad rush for a nearby building. The elites drew their swords and cloaked themselves before entering the building. The elites split up, one coming up the steps, the other climbing the elevator cables, while the major combed the bottem. In the upper part of the building my brother was waiting, finger on the trigger, waiting for the first elite to walk up the steps through a door way. He didn’t see the elite, instead the elite walked past him and was about to run him through when his buddy pulled a buck and jumped on the elite stabbing it just below the neck. The elite threw him off, but he wasn’t cloaked anymore. My brother unloaded his entire mag into him till you could hear the click click of the trigger. Blue blood splattered on his face, he drew the knife out of its chest and checked on his buddy. He was winded but still in the fight.

“Well, I know what your nickname is going to be.”

“And what is that going to be?”, He asked coughing a little, groaning as he was helped up.

“Clocker”

“Clocker?”

“Yeah, I mean you practiaclly clocked his lights out.”

“Hey you guys alright?”, Overkill hailed over comms.

“Yeah but we got two elites still hunting us.”
“Copy, we got this site rigged. We’re heading back to the hog, think you can get there?

“We’re already on our way, blow this place when we give the word.”

“Copy that.”

“Hey you hear that?”

“Hear what?”

My brother walked over to a unfinished window. “That!”

A phantom came in hot and dropped off a wraith and a squad of covenent. The wraith blasted the window and most of the wall to bits as the reinforcements flooded into the lower levels.

“We might be able to call in evac if we get to the top!”,my brother shouted as another wraith blast shook the building. They ran as fast as they could up the steps to the top, hearing the covenent climb up the steps. Clocker threw his last nade down the steps. They heard a few grunts scream and watched as some of the steps collapsed. When they got to the top they lite a flare and waited for evac. As the peilcan got close enough for them to get in with the rest of the squad, the elite that climbed the elevator shot my brother in the back. Clocker caught him as everyone else unloaded into the elite. After they flew away and watched the place go up in smoke, they looked at how bad the burn was. It went throgh the kevlar and through his skin so you could see his spine which was still intact.

“Well now we got your nickname, cobalt.

“Cobalt?”

“Yeah your covered in dark blue blood, cobalt. Now what took the rest of you guys so long?

“Our nicknames. When we got back to the hog burnout did a burnout when we were being chased by a patrol and boomstick over here grabbed our last few grenades to set up a trip wire for them, blew half the block up with all that plasma they were packing.

We called the session there while I figured out what they should be before the next simulation, Flood training. But what do you think? I’m thinking at least hell jumpers if not spartans. They might not be hyper lethal, but they sure are dang close.
