This amazing news for the most famous DnD YouTube channel Critical Role comes at the heels of an original plan of just making a 10-episode season. In other words, Amazon was so impressed with the Twitch channel (Twitch is owned by Amazon, by the way) that it decided to animate Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina for the span of 2 seasons – that’s 24 episodes in total.
What Is Critical Role: The Legend Of Vox Machina?
Critical Role: The Legend Of Vox Machina is a campaign played by Critical Role where the main goal of the party – Vox Machina – was to eradicate evil in their world of Exandria. The campaign laster over the span of 115 episodes (!), in addition to some additional one-shots.
Needless to say, the campaign has a lot of material which can be animated. The piece of material that got the a-okay, as determined by a poll, is “the Briarwood-arc,” where the party help one of their own members to free the town of Whitestone.
Original Plans
It all started when, Critical Role launched a Kickstarter in order to raise funds for animation. This began early this year, and the bare minimum required was $750,000. That goal didn’t even take an hour to reach, and the final amount stood at over $11 million.
The 6th most funded project on Kickstarter of all time caught every DnD fan’s eye, Amazon must have been watching as well. Critical Role‘s own goal was to make 2 special prequel episodes, and 8 episodes for the Briarwood-arc. This would make for a 10-episode season. Now we know that they got more than they bargained for.
What To Expect
What to expect is not really the thrill of animation. The story of the campaign is already known to many fans, available on Critical Role‘s channel over 115 episodes. This dabble at animation is where the thrill’s at.
As for the release date, that’s still up in the air. But a rough estimate is late 2020. The original cast (of Critical Role members) will stay in tact, and other big names such as the likes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle‘s Brandon Auman, Titmouse’s Chris Prynoski, and Niko and the Sword of Light‘s Sung Jin Ahn will be joining them as executive producers.
Those who backed the Kickstarter will receive exclusive benefits. In particular, they will be able to watch season one for free, and also receive exclusive first access to the two-part prequel episodes.

With unprecedented confidence from Amazon, this is going to be one of Critical Role‘s most impactful contributions to the world of DnD for sure. There are high expectations for the two-season animation, and we think those will be lived up to.
