How we surprised the DM with our new characters

Two players feel like they are not as useful so they introduce new characters in a big way

So a friend and I are part of a small roleplaying community on Discord and we are playing together in one of our friends campaigns. The DM explained that this was a drop in drop out kind of game so as long as he had players the game went on. My friend, who I'll call T, started with a Tiefling Warlock who was a fortune teller by trade. I made a Catfolk Oathbreaker Paladin that was branded a traitor in his home realm. Some of the other party members include a Human Evocation Witch (B), a Half-Elf Glamour Bard (S), and a Minotaur War Cleric (A). This was a high magic setting where portals that connected worlds existed and at the heart of it was the world of Nexus; where most of the story takes place. While the adventures we all had were fun, T and I were feeling useless sonce the cleric could be the tank and there wasn't much need for a divination warlock. Once we explained everything to everyone, DM understood how we felt and was cool about it as long as he was ok with our new characters. While I'm normally never a full spellcaster, I still wanted to have a high charisma stat and use a sword. So I spent the next week making a character that wouldn't step on anyone's toes and i might enjoy playing. T made a Circle of Spores Druid Wood Elf who had an obsession with mushrooms and got high on thier own supply. I made a Mark of Shadow Elf Whisper Bard from House Thuranni in Ebberon who was trained in espionage and assassination named Variel Dryst. After getting the introductions out of the way, we got our next big plot hook. The world was getting afflicted by some kind of blight that was turning the land black and creating strange inverse, horrifying, parodies of creatures. Early the next day at four in the morning, I heard a loud knock on the door. I opened the door cautiously only to be greeted by a large muscle man falling to the floor with cuts all over his body. Doing my best to bandage him,  i called for the others and saved the mans life. The strong man was from S' backstory and explained that the circus was in trouble due to the blight. While traveling on the road, we came across a slaughtered caravan with twenty dead bodies. Wanting to get some answers, i cast speak with dead on a corpse and started asking questions. It explained that a large monstrosity attacked them because they were in its territory and that we were as well. Not wanting them to return from the dead, we set up a bonfire and burn the bodies. Unfortunately this brought the attention of the creature responsible for the atrocity. It was a amalgamation of bears mushed together in a fleshy blob. We roll initiative and i go last after the cleric. After A casted Guiding Bolt, I rolled to cast Witch Bolt at 5th level with advantage. Nat 20! At 10d12 damage, the monster got a large chunk of its body blown away as i shredded on my lute so hard lightning came out, shrinking it down to size. T cast a spell which prompted a Dex save or take necrotic damage. It fails but still takes half because it had been hit with that damage type earlier and was adapting. Sensing it might not be very smart, i prompted an intelligence save as i cast Raulothim's Psychic Lance. It fails and takes 10d6 psychic damage. S finished the job by smacking it with his dancing sword and DM cringes at the sheer comedy of a dancing sword missing on purpose only to come around and hit it with the flat of the blade. Once we arrived at the circus, things were not looking good. We were escorted to dinning tent and were going to be served a three course meal. There we saw a copy of S and a lion tamer. With my passive perception of 20, i knew right away that the food was off because the ribs were shaped like a humans. Once T caught on they instinctively attacked the copy of S and we got into a fight once again. A got surrounded by five minions and casted Flame Strike aimed at himself so that the minions got caught in the blast. He passes and loses some health; but he did kill them. Lion tamer casted Summon Abjuration Spirit and a Beholder Spirit appeared. Some of i took damage but i still laughed at her beholder spirit. "Childs play. I pull out a gem from a dragons horde and cast Summon Draconic Spirit". This caused DM to pause for a good few minutes as he physically typed out his audible stunded  silence. I sicked my dragon on the copy of S bringing him to his knees. Then B casted a spell that caused exhaustion on the lion tamer to which T casted Blight at max level. She fails and disintegrates causing the beholder to disappear as well. We made quick work of the rest of the minions and began healing up on a short rest. After the session was over, i checked on DM and asked how he liked our characters and he said they were good fits. I'm looking forward to whatever shenanigans we get into and cant wait to follow up this story. TLDR players don't feel adequate with current characters so they introduce new ones in a big way.
