The time I used a tattoo to outsmart the Bad guy

Because it turns out the magic tattoos are pretty dang cool.

So a while back I was playing in a group with my friends, ran by my friend K. We were all big fans of greek Mythology and K especially was a greek major, so she decided to run a Theros campaign. Our characters had met up and were all given a prophecy by Athena about different things going on in the major polises. Now K wasn't thrilled with the details laid out in the book, so while we use the name Theros and the Polises therein, most of the details are original.

Our story starts in Setessa. In this Polis the part of the prophecy spoke of a Cancer in the heart of the city. We had also heard from some centaurs we fought on our way into the city that there was a second temple to Demter being built, much larger than the one that already existed as the heart of the polis. However the resources it was taking to construct this building was throwing the nearby forest completly out order. We also heard that the oracle that resided in this place, a Centaur known as Silverbow, had recently fallen ill with his Apprentice Lorne having taken over all of his duties. Naturally we were susicious of Lorne, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

We arrive in the city during a point where the market was open with all sorts of goods and services. My character, a Minotaur Barbarian named Granite, became interested in a Masqurade Tattoo. I was drawn to this because it seemed like a fun asthetic choice. A tattoo that could shift around and make pictures, with the added bonus of having disguise self for when we got to Skophos eventually? Sounded awesome to me! The party also got a number of smaller items before the whole thing ended, and then we investigated the city. Originally we tried to speak with Silverbow, and we were railed roaded by Lorne, and when myself and our bard Orion returned from the meeting we were under the effects of some sort of sickness spell.

So, we continued through our adventures. Had a close call with a powerful undead, and the more we investigated the more signs pointed to Lorne. Finally we managed to convince the counsel of the city for us to be able to meet Silverbow, and I volunteered my character to meet him. We were also hoping that there would be one other person, so if Lorne tried anything funny it wasn't just a sing individual against a cleric worthy of being an Oracle's apprentice. However Lorne was able to convince the counsel otherwise. So it ended up being just me, Silverbow, and Lorne.

Now I do not remember all the details of my conversation with Silverbow. It's been the better part of a couple years now and I no longer play this character. But the whole party could tell he was basically a prisoner and we were trying to legitmately unravel the prophecy as much as we could without blatantly telling Lorne the jig was up. And as I left the room Lorne pulled me aside to speak to me so he could cast Command. Telling me to forget our entire conversation. I failed the save, and Granite's mind went blank. There was an itch in the back of his head. Like he had just forgotten something very important.

However, this was something I had been very concerned about. After all my dude was a barbarian. Wisdom saves are not a strength of theirs. So I hatched a plan. During the conversation with Silverbow, I used my Masqurade Tattoo to make note of every single word said the entire time. Down to having it bullet pointed who said what in what order. All the way up to Lorne commanding me to Forget. All we had to do to see the entire conversation was shave Granite's arms. We took it to the counsel and we were able to convince them to confront Lorne. He managed to hear about it and planned to leave that night, but we managed to stop him before he could escape. With a Boneclaw at his back and powerful spells, it was a close call. But we won out.

And that is how I outsmarted a Cleric with a tattoo.

Also yes I ran everything I did by K. She knew it was coming.
